Brynniulfr "Brynn" Herleifson

In the Society for Creative Anachronism I am called Brynn, and I am a member of the Shire of Greyhope. Greyhope is in turn in the Constellation region of the Kingdom of the Middle (the Midrealm). I am currently the Constellation regional herald. In the past I have been the kingdom's Escutcheon herald and my shire's pursuivant.

Brynn, my persona, was born in the late summer of 1003 in Iceland. Raised by his mother's family he went east and ended up in Byzantium as part of the Varangian Guard. Frequently membership in the Guard brings wealth, and it did for Brynn, allowing him to become a merchant for a time.

What is the Society for Creative Anachronism?
(Borrowed directly from sca.org)

The SCA is an international organization dedicated to researching and re-creating the arts and skills of pre-17th-century Europe. Our "Known World" consists of 19 kingdoms, with over 30,000 members residing in countries around the world. Participants, dressed in clothing of the Middle Ages and Renaissance, attend events which may feature tournaments, arts exhibits, classes, workshops, dancing, feasts, and more. Our "royalty" hold courts at which they recognize and honor members for their contributions to the group.

I would add that he above 30,000 figure probably only accounts for the paying membership, which is not a requirement for participation, and that including the active non-paying members I suspect the figure can be much higher. That description also leaves off <Begin Bias!> the incredibly important work of the heralds!<End Bias> In fact, although there are excellent benefits to being a paid member, to only requirements to attend an SCA event and participate are:

"... really very basic. All participants must make an attempt at pre-17th Century clothing. All participants are expected to comport themselves as ladies and gentlemen. All participants are required to obey modern law and the rules of the SCA as set forth in the Governing Documents, officers' policies, and Kingdom and Principality law." (sca.org again)

Take a few minutes to read SCADemo.com for excellent overview information and pictures!

If this sounds more interesting and less strange, find your local group! Each Kingdom and most local groups have a Chatelaine, an officer responsible for the care and upbringing of new memebers. Feel free to E-mail Me if you get really lost. You can find your local Kingdom (there are 19, covering almost the entire world) at this page. Each Kingdom should have an easy way to locate your local group (again, look for a link referencing the Chatelaine, Hospitaller, or Castellan)

A nod to our neighbors: Greyhope is bordered by the Barony of the White Waters [South Bend] , the Barony of Ayreton [Greater Chicago], the Barony of Andelcrag [Western Michigan], and distantly the Barony of Rivenstar [West Lafayette]. Baronies are larger groups that have their own Royalty (Barons and Baronesses) who can issue Baronial awards. They may even have smaller Shire-sized groups within them.
